Write to the Prime Minister of Australia informing

sheep export and lamb museling ceases

Boycott Australian Wool

Australian wool represents massive suffering for sheep, millions of whom are mutilated each year by being trussed upside-down and having huge chunks of flesh carved from their rumps without any pain relief and are often shipped thousands of miles through scorching heat and freezing cold by sea in open-decked ships, to have their throats slit in filthy, open-air markets while they are still fully conscious.

PETA has tried to work with Australian government officials for the last year, sending letters, reports, and video documentation of the cruelty involved in the Australian wool industry. Recently, Australian activists dressed as 'Lucy' the sheep "dogged" Australian Prime Minister John Howard and then Labor leader Mark Latham at public appearances calling on the officials to put an end to the painful mutilations and live export of Australian sheep. After holding multiple protests on three continents and issuing a year-long warning to the Australian government to curb the worst abuses of sheep raised for their wool, PETA has launched an international boycott of Australian wool that will last until the grossly inhumane practices of live export and mulesing have stopped.

More than three-quarters of Australians are opposed to live export, including many legislators and other governmental officials. The Australian RSPCA continues its campaign against this cruel industry, and more than 110,000 individuals recently signed a petition supporting a ban on live exports. Many prominent Australians have recently joined with
Animals Australia to call on Prime Minister John Howard the Labor Leader Mr Beasley to end live animal export.

American retail giant Abercrombie & Fitch has set a new standard for clothing companies by pledging not to use Australian wool in any of its garments until both mulesing and live exports are stopped. Abercrombie & Fitch hopes to set a precedent in the world that other retailers can follow to help end the needless suffering of sheep who are raised for their wool. As more and more retailers follow Abercrombie & Fitch's lead and stop buying wool that comes from mutilated and abused Australian sheep, the Australian wool industry will be forced to abandon its cruel practices.

Please write to Abercrombie & Fitch officials to thank them for their commitment to animal welfare:

Many government officials, international clothing companies, animal protection groups, and compassionate citizens have already demanded that wool producers and the Australian government take steps to eliminate these practices. Yet, year after year, millions of sheep continue to suffer during mulesing and live export. These practices cause excruciating pain and often death, proving that no degree of standards or "improvements" can ensure the welfare of animals who are subjected to them and that the only compassionate solution is a ban on both.
