One of two greyhounds who
suffered a horrific death and were found washed up on a shore with
concrete bricks tied to their necks. The once-prized animals were
found off a pier in West Cork with ropes and bricks tied to their
necks to make them drown.
Tom Mellif from Skibbereen
was out walking one morning along the banks of the River Ilen when
he saw the dogs."I was horrified -- I know the stretch of the river
well and the dogs had been dumped overnight," said Mr Mellif, a
consultant construction engineer.
Both dogs -- aged one and
two years old respectively -- had been well cared for in life. Yet
their owners had decided to cruelly end their lives as the animals
became a liability.
The dogs were among an
estimated 4,000 greyhounds who are slaughtered or abandoned each
year in Ireland.

THE BACKGROUND
STORY...
These atrocities are happening in
countries that undertake greyhound racing. In the UK alone 40,000
greyhounds are disposed of every year by the racing
industry.
Due to the over breeding and short
racing 'careers' there is a surplus of greyhounds with the majority
of the dogs being killed.
Extremely cruel methods such as
drowning, shooting, beating are commonplace. Greyhounds have been
found mutilated with their ears chopped off to prevent
identification of the owner through the ear tattoo.
Thousands of puppies that fail the
grade are routinely killed. The lucky dogs end up being abandoned
but with little hope of finding a home even though greyhounds are
naturally docile and affectionate dogs and given the chance they
make wonderful pets.
Greyhound racing has been
recognised as a cruel sport and banned in 6 states in the USA and in
South Africa with growing opposition in other countries.
The World Greyhound Racing
Federation the ruling body of world wide racing and private
corporations have began to promote and introduce greyhound racing in
Asia.
The dogs are being exported from
Australia with racing and breeding already underway in Vietnam,
Macau, China and more recently in Korea.
They further plan on creating a
network of tracks throughout Vietnam, the Philippines and Cambodia.
These are countries notorious for the barbaric torture and slaughter
of dogs for human consumption. At present this is the fate
greyhounds in Asia unless we stop them.

Dear :
I am very disappointed
to learn that [name of sponsor] is promoting greyhound racing. I
urge you to stop supporting this cruel industry.
Each year,
thousands of young greyhounds who are unable to run fast enough to
win are killed. Additionally, every week at tracks around the
country, truckloads of failed or injured greyhounds are killed or
worse, sent to research laboratories. In total, the greyhound racing
industry kills approximately 20,000-25,000 greyhounds annually in
the United States alone.
Greyhounds routinely suffer inhumane
treatment starting from the breeding farm, to the training farm, in
transport, and at race tracks. Greyhounds who make it to racetracks
are typically forced to live in crates for 18-20 hours per day. Some
dogs are left muzzled almost constantly. Greyhound rescue groups
nationwide routinely receive racing dogs riddled with external and
internal parasites, open weeping sores, and broken bones because it
is more profitable to bring in fresh dogs or neglect existing dogs
than to provide proper care.
Contrary to industry
propaganda, the majority of racing greyhounds are not adopted out as
pets. With the already huge problem of pet overpopulation, with
millions of cats and dogs being killed at shelters, it is just not
possible to find homes for the thousands of dogs that the greyhound
racing industry discards every year.
The killing and the
abuse will never stop unless the greyhound industry is banned or
goes bankrupt. Please educate yourself by going to the following web
sites: http://www.greyhounds.org and http://www.grey2kusa.org.
Please stop supporting this atrocity.
Sincerely,

Ban the exporting of greyhounds to Asia

To: Australian
federal Government
We the undersigned call upon the
Australian federal government to ban the export of greyhounds to
Asia.
The Australian greyhound racing industry is shamelessly
promoting and encouraging greyhound racing in Asia. At present
greyhounds are being exported from Australia to Asia to places
such as Korea, Vietnam and China for the purpose of
racing/breeding with further plans to create networks of tracks
throughout Cambodia and the Philippines. These are countries
notorious for the barbaric torture and slaughter of dogs for human
consumption. There is no hope or opportunity of rehoming
greyhounds that are 'surplus' to requirements in Asia. As exposed
by the media they are ending their days being butchered in the dog
meat industry or thrown into landfills. At present this is the
fate of Australian greyhounds in Asia.
We urge you to take
immediate action to protect the greyhounds of Australia from such
a fate and ban the export of greyhounds to Asia.
Sincerely,
Greyhounds

Australia)
