THE
PETITION Oxford University has
been conducting draconian experiments on primates for years.
The
torture endured by these highly intelligent animals has been documented by
the vivisectors themselves, as well as by several animal welfare
organizations.
Now Oxford is in the midst of building a new
primate torture lab.
The experiments include nerve cell and brain
damage experiments that can last years: One example included nerve cell
experiments in monkeys where electrodes were inserted into monkeys' brains
to measure how nerve cells respond to different tastes. The scientists
justify their experiments by claiming they are needed "to understand how
appetite and food intake are controlled by the brain, and disorders in
appetite and feeding..."
There are more reliable methods to
predict the safety and effectiveness of drugs for people, as well as
psychological and physiological problems, such as clinical studies, in
vitro (test tube) tests using human cells and tissues and sophisticated
computer simulations designed to mimic human metabolism.
Most
recently, an investigation was conducted by the local police department
after the University's own veterinarian complained that a monkey had been
forced to endure undue suffering. An article in the news stated, "The
Times has learnt that the laboratory vet wanted the animal put out of its
misery, but was said to have been refused on the ground that the animal
was an asset."
As is the usual course, criminal charges were not
filed.
Please help put an end to the building of this new primate
laboratory and speak for those who cannot. For more information, go to:
